Overview

As the Covid-19 pandemic affects the world, great examples of compassion, empathy, strength and patriotism flood the Internet. Although these heartwarming stories and pictures are welcomed by readers in this difficult time, we must still take care to develop critical thinking skills – to ensure that the sources are credible and what we pass on to others as fact is truthful.

We can use this difficult time to reflect on the way in which music demonstrates patriotism and cultural pride.

Nessun Dorma During Italy’s Pandemic

While Italy, like the rest of the world endures a quarantine form the Covid 19 pandemic, a video circulated around the Internet claiming to be the Italian Air Force flying a single jet, representing the virus, to meet other jets that stream the colors of the Italian flag. All the while. opera singer Luciano Pavarotti performs in background music the Nessum Dorma, with words translated to English to mean “I will win,” though the Internet version translates the words to “We shall overcome.”

Was this a show of patriotism and strength of the Italian Air Force? Who matched the background music to the video? Is the language “We shall overcome” equivalent to the meaning of the words used in the Italian opera on which the music was based? What was the origin of the video? Does it matter  if the video was legitimate if it had the effect of engendering national pride and optimism in a time of crisis?
